In a bold move to accelerate the shift toward electric mobility, Volvo Cars has launched a visionary initiative in Sweden offering one year of free, fossil-free home charging to buyers of its fully electric vehicles. Partnering with energy company Vattenfall, Volvo aims to make electric driving more accessible and appealing to a broader range of consumers. Beginning in February 2026, Swedish customers purchasing or leasing a new Volvo EV will enjoy complimentary home charging for up to 25,000 kilometers per year, effectively turning sustainability into both a practical and economic advantage.

The initiative will be facilitated through an electricity contract with Vattenfall and Volvo’s smart charging feature, integrated into the Volvo Cars app. This technology intelligently schedules charging during periods of lower electricity demand when costs and carbon emissions are typically lower. The app also allows users to monitor battery levels, track energy usage, and automatically deduct charging costs from their monthly electricity bills. It’s a seamless blend of convenience, transparency, and environmental responsibility.

Volvo Cars’ broader ambition is to demonstrate how vehicles can play an active role in the evolving energy ecosystem. With the arrival of vehicle-to-everything (V2X) technology in 2026, the company plans to extend the program to models like the EX90, enabling drivers to use their car batteries as mobile energy source powering homes or even feeding electricity back into the grid.

This partnership between Volvo Cars and Vattenfall reflects a shared commitment to sustainability, aiming to reduce barriers to EV adoption while optimizing energy use. With five fully electric models already on the road and the upcoming launch of the EX60, Volvo continues to lead by example proving that the future of driving can be both eco-conscious and effortlessly efficient.
