Freight Network, bp pulse and Moto have unveiled plans to roll out dedicated public charging infrastructure for electric heavy goods vehicles (eHGVs). The initiative will begin with three key motorway service areas Lymm, Toddington North, and Toddington South where six drive-through bays equipped with megawatt charging system (MCS) capacity will be installed. These bays will also support CCS fast charging, ensuring compatibility with a wide range of electric trucks. The first site is expected to be operational in 2026, setting the stage for a significant leap in long-haul electrification.
Moto, which has already equipped its 70 UK locations with EV charging infrastructure for cars, is now extending this commitment to the freight sector. By 2030, the company plans to deploy around 300 eHGV charging bays across 23 service areas, making motorway charging for electric trucks both accessible and scalable.
Ken McMeikan, CEO of Moto, expressed enthusiasm for the partnership, highlighting the company’s mission to lead the UK’s transition towards electric mobility. He emphasized that collaboration with bp pulse would deliver the infrastructure and innovation needed to make electrification of long-haul trucking not only viable but practical.
Echoing this vision, Jo Hayward, vice president of bp mobility and convenience retail, underscored bp’s commitment to enabling fleet operators’ transition to EV trucks by providing reliable charging solutions precisely where they are most needed. She stressed that the partnership aligns with bp’s customer-centric approach to convenience, efficiency, and sustainability.
Nigel Head, vice president of European e-truck at BP Pulse, reinforced that this initiative builds upon proven successes in Germany and now extends that expertise to the UK. With Moto’s strategic locations offering prime motorway access, the collaboration is poised to serve both domestic and cross-border freight operators, accelerating the UK’s journey towards a lower-emission future.
