Kia is on the brink of introducing its much-anticipated EV2 electric supermini, with a public debut expected in early 2024. President and CEO Song Ho-Sung emphasizes the strategic significance of this model, particularly for the European market, stating that the EV2 will not be available for sale in Korea. As he articulates, “EV3 is the smallest size for Korea. EV2 is for Europe,” reflecting the differing market preferences where compact cars dominate in Europe, while larger vehicles resonate more deeply with Korean consumers, who often associate them with prestige.

Production of the EV2 is slated to commence in 2026 at Kia’s Slovakian facility, which previously manufactured the now-retired Ceed model. Initially unveiled as a concept during Kia's EV Day in Spain, the EV2 is set to become a formidable player in the electric supermini segment, competing against established models like the Citroën e-C3 and Volkswagen ID. Polo, with an anticipated starting price around €30,000 (£26,000). Following the EV2, Kia intends to launch an even smaller model, the EV1, aimed at urban drivers and targeted to rival the upcoming Volkswagen ID.1.

Although Kia has not released an official reveal date, speculation suggests that the Brussels Motor Show in January could serve as the platform for the EV2's public unveiling. Early test mules disguised in heavy camouflage provide clues to its design, showcasing a compact SUV silhouette characterized by a taut, upright stance and Kia's distinctive ‘Star Map’ daytime running lights (DRLs). The rear design features a wide-set lighting arrangement that emphasizes the vehicle's breadth, complemented by rugged cladding and functional bumper detailing that convey the necessary SUV aesthetics. Additionally, prototype models sport striking four-spoke alloy wheels, though the production versions are expected to adopt a more conservative wheel design.

The EV2 is strategically positioned within Kia’s lineup, priced just above the affordable Citroën e-C3, Jeep Avenger, and Ford Puma Gen-E. Its launch in 2026 will effectively align with two high-profile entrants in the small electric vehicle segment the Volkswagen ID. Polo and Cupra’s Raval. Notably, the introduction of the EV2 is designed to create space within Kia’s hierarchy for the forthcoming EV1 model, which Ho-Sung confirmed is “definitely” part of the brand’s future plans. With trademarks secured from EV1 through EV9, Kia demonstrates its commitment to a cohesive nomenclature and its ambition to solidify its presence in the burgeoning landscape of electric mobility.
