In a landmark move towards smarter urban infrastructure, Udaipur has embraced Artificial Intelligence (AI) to untangle one of its most persistent challenges traffic congestion. The city has launched an AI-driven traffic management system at the bustling Fatehpura intersection, marking Rajasthan’s entry into a new age of intelligent mobility. The pilot project, which began its trial run on Friday, reflects a forward-thinking effort to harmonize technology with urban life.

Equipped with high-resolution cameras and advanced sensors, the system continuously monitors vehicle density across all four lanes. Unlike conventional fixed-timer lights, the AI dynamically adjusts signals based on real-time traffic flow, granting green lights to the most congested lanes and cutting idle waiting time. If a lane is empty, the system seamlessly shifts within seconds, ensuring no time or fuel is wasted.

What makes this initiative especially groundbreaking is its sensitivity to emergencies. The AI is programmed to recognize the distinct sound of ambulance and fire brigade sirens. On detecting such vehicles, it instantly turns the corresponding signal green, allowing them to pass through unobstructed potentially saving crucial minutes and lives.

The entire setup is integrated with a mobile application, empowering traffic authorities with real-time monitoring and control capabilities. According to Traffic Deputy Superintendent of Police Ashok Anjana, congestion peaks during morning and evening hours, and the AI’s adaptive response will prove invaluable in easing the city’s traffic load. Encouraged by initial results, authorities are considering extending the technology to other major intersections across Udaipur.

Costing around ₹10 lakh per intersection, this pilot project is more than an experiment, it’s a glimpse into the future of sustainable traffic governance. If successful, Udaipur’s AI-powered system could become a model for cities nationwide, delivering smoother commutes, reduced emissions, and faster emergency responses.
